Abstract

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is an idiosyncratic disorder which is mainly caused due to the the use of neuroleptic agents (eg, butyrophenones, phenothiazines) that leads to the blockage of dopamine. This is a case report of a 18 yrs old female patient developed symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. The patient was apparently asymptomatic one week back then The patient came with the complaints of muscle rigidity, aggressive behavior. She had no such complaints in the past but was under the treatment of antipsychotics admitted in the psychiatry ward of a multispeciality hospital. For diagnosis creatinine kinase, serum electrolytes ,complete blood picture, muscle rigidity, behavioral changes and a medication history of typical antipsychotic haloperidol which is the main cause of NMS. The treatment given was clonazepam, olanzepine, lorazepam followed for 5days and discharged. The purpose of the authors to make the people especially from the medical and related field well acquainted about the disease and its complications.
