Saraca indica belongs to family Caesalpinaceae. It is a well known medicinal plant of Indian subcontinent and Ayurvedic physicians, even now, are using ashoka in various diseases, especially in the gynecological disorders. Saraca indica is reported to contain glycoside, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. It was reported that it contained spasmogenic, oxytocic, uterotonic, anti-bacterial, anti-tumour, antiprogestational, antiestrogenic activity against menorrhagia and anti-cancer. This review contains phytoconstituents and pharmacological activities of various parts of the plant.
